Memories – Mr Taylor – 1968

We’ve had a wonderful message from Mr Taylor who follows our FB page here, and Graeme’s mileage league, where saw Howie’s post with the the awards menu from 1969, Mr Taylor was an a race winner that year. Here are some amazing recollections from Mr Taylor, I hope he doesn’t mind me sharing them here but this was lovely to read.

I did some racing in the 1960s and it was a shock, therefore, to see a picture of the Wheelers Annual Dinner menu from February 1969 where I am mentioned as the winner of your Palmer Cup Annual ’50’. I won three years running 1-56 and, I think, 1-53 and 1-52 (they were lame tortoise days back then!!).

You may be amused to see two pictures from that event held on 19th. May 1968, Shrivenham (out) and Fairford (back). The course went Stratton St. Margaret, Faringdon, Lechlade, Ampney Crucis, Burford and return to Stratton St. Margaret.

The gold medal mentioned on the menu is a medal presented by Bert Cooper who was your Club Champion in 1926. It was one won by Bert forty years earlier and it was a touching gesture that he passed it to me.

One of my most vivid recollections was visiting Dennis White at his home in 1971. I have many memories of the Wheelers but that was awesome – especially as I knew the then current 24 hour record holder (Roy Cromack), very well.
Please extend your thanks to Mr Taylor for allowing us to share in these great memories, the roads always look so good in these older pictures.
